127 Hours out on Disc Today
It may have been snubbed at this weekend’s Oscars, but 127 Hours was probably the best dramatization of a true-life outdoorsy rescue story in theaters last year.
Kidding aside, I went to see it in the theater with some of my Mount Whitney buddies and we all dug it. Like one of my other favorite outdoor movies Into the Wild, I thought it did a great job of capturing the solo hiker’s mindset when he or she is out in the middle of nowhere. The cinematography and editing are top-notch, and for a story about a guy spending more than 5 days trapped in a slot canyon by himself, it’s a surprisingly lively movie. And if that’s not good enough for you, there’s a ton of great footage of Utah. The DVD features the usual commentary tracks and deleted scenes, while the Blu-Ray version also features a mini documentary on the Search and Rescue techniques that helped save Aron Ralston. And remember, next time you go out on a solo trip – tell someone where you’re going!
