Camp Out with the L.A. Urban Rangers
The Los Angeles Urban Rangers are a group I’ve been following with interest for a few years. They’re a wonderful combination of street artists, provocateurs, civic boosters and park rangers whose aim is to get people interested in our own urban backyard. Past projects have included placing NPS-style signs around the city’s tiny green spaces, leading urban hikes and fireside talks, and showing people how to use the hidden (but legal) coastal access in Malibu, much to the homeowners’ chagrin.
This year the rangers have been working with MOCA to turn their focus on downtown L.A., and on Thursday September 1st from 7-10PM, they’ll host their Critical Campout – examining the changing landscape of downtown through hikes, campfire talks, and other exhibits that’ll make you feel like you’re at the rangers’ station in Yosemite. The event is free and open to the public, although reservations to the backcountry hike and overnight camp are full. Head down to MOCA on Grand Avenue on Thursday and look at your city in a whole new light!
